How to Organize a Closet

Having a tidy closet is a great way to ensure other aspects of your life remain organized as well. But how does one go from messy to organized, as far as closets are concerned? The good news is that there are simple steps one can take to organize their closet, and make sure it stays that way for a long time.

The first thing anybody wishing to organize a closet should do is sort through their clothes. This is how you do it-take out all your clothes, including shoes, from your closet and place them on your bed or floor. Proceed to separate your clothes into two piles, one containing clothes you wear on a regular basis and the other pile containing clothes you have not worn in a while. Clothes that are seasonally inappropriate should go into the pile of clothes you’ll not be wearing in a while. After you’ve decided which clothes will go into the closet, put the other pile in a plastic container and store this under your bed, at the back of the closet or anywhere else that you deem fit.

As much as one grows attached to certain items or clothing over time, it gets to a point where keeping them all is pointless and untidy too. As such, you need to decide which clothes you’ll throw out or donate. Holding onto clothes you no longer wear will only make your closet and entire home disorganized.

Once you’re done sorting through your clothes, and deciding which to keep and which to give away, the next step involves cleaning the closet. Vacuum the entire space thoroughly, to get rid of any dirt that may have accumulated over time. Only after you’re sure your closet is squeaky clean should you proceed to put back your clothes.

When putting your clothes in the closet, it is always advisable to hang them up as this conserves space. There are different approaches for closet organization and you could arrange your clothes by season, type, regularity of wear, color and so on. Just make sure you make it easy for yourself to find a particular item of clothing when you need it.

The clothes that you do not hang should be organized in other parts of your closet. Remember also to organize your shoes, and keep those you will not be using in the near future stored in bins. A shoe rack is a nice thing to have, as it enables you to arrange your shoes neatly and conserves space as well.

If you have any other additional items besides clothes and shoes, go through them to ascertain what needs to be kept and what should be tossed out. You may want a closet shelving system. Don’t clutter your closet with too many unnecessary boxes. It is always best to keep the boxes at a minimum.

And that’s how you organize a closet.
