Grace Potter and the Nocturnals
(Hollywood Records)
Despite three exemplary albums that evoke sass and soul, Grace Potter & the Nocturnals somehow still linger well below the radar. Hopefully then, the six song EP Live in Skowhegan can turn a few heads and offer further proof of their prowess. Recorded before a clearly enthused audience, its songs gain an anthemic aura in live performance, reflecting an instrumental interplay that complements their incendiary singer. Potter's extraordinary vocal runs the gamut from a riveting wail on "Rugged Company" to the brooding rumble that underscores "Can't See Through Sugar," all illumination of her powerful presence.
It all culminates in a sturdy sound that gleans the essence of Americana, imbued with a forthright determination that might otherwise suggest Chrissie Hynde fronting Tom Petty and the Heartbreakers. A spellbinding set that swoops and soars, Live in Skowhegan clearly demonstrates that Porter and company possess all it takes to ensure their stardom.
Standout tracks: "Ragged Company," "Ah Mary" LEE ZIMMERMAN
