Elvis Costello

At a remove of 30 years, is there anything left to say about Elvis Costello’s greatest album? Certainly it was so frontloaded with visceral New Wave classics, from churning opening cut “No Action” to punk-soul stomper “Pump It Up” to the anthemic “Radio, Radio,” that it left its ’78 peers sucking exhaust fumes and topped scores of critical year-end lists. But you knew that.
In ’93 Rykodisc issued an expanded version of TYM and Rhino followed suit in 2002 with a rarities-stocked double-disc, so consumers may chafe at forking over a third time. But here, the second CD comprises a vintage Attractions concert, professionally recorded in D.C. on Feb. 28, 1978 and subsequently broadcast (and bootlegged). Recall that this was just two months after the infamous Saturday Night Live appearance where Costello infuriated Lorne Michaels by halting a prearranged number to launch full-tilt into “Radio, Radio—an electrifying moment in TV history, and a signpost that Costello and his Attractions were no groveling Limey gimps. Indeed, in the D.C. show one hears a group absolutely at the top of its game, full of we’re-gonna-show-you swagger and the confidence that comes with knowing it’s got the tunes to back up the ‘tude. Pump it fucking up.
