We Are Scientists

If common sense is what you’re looking for in indie rock lyrics, consider the wisdom of We Are Scientists. Lesson 1: “Tonight, I promise to remember that making promises is always a mistake.” But do take the band’s recommendations in stride – for, “it doesn’t matter what you ask, it’s who you’re asking,” as guitarist and lead singer Keith Murray quips on the disco-tinged song “Lethal Enforcer.” Like 2006’s With Love and Squalor, the latest offering from W.A.S. speaks to the fashionable but introspective, trying-to-get-their-shit-together-in-between-partying set – young hipsters used to “soaking up the hours everyone else throws away.” Presumably, that demographic includes core W.A.S. members Murray and bassist Chris Cain, whose synth-heavy, occasionally fuzzy, danceable and perfect-for-Astralwerks sound reflects the chaotic experience of their generation. Plenty of oohs, echo choruses and catchy bass lines ensure that the lyrical nuggets will stick better than sayings from Grandma, even after a long night at the bar.
