Urges
(Wicked Cool)
It's pretty clear what Little Steven sees in these guys. If you're gonna do a show called Little Steven's Underground Garage, this is exactly what your label should be doing - pure garage abandon as explosive as the Cynics at their most unhinged, with attitude and stolen hooks to spare. These guys are based in Dublin and the record's been out for a while in Europe, but the U.S. version kicks off with a killer bonus track called "Jenny Jenny," an early Urges B-side that, despite the name, is not a Little Richard song. In fact, it sounds more like the Stooges doing "Steppin' Stone."
And nearly every song here rocks with that same knuckle-dragging swagger, from "I Gotta Wait" to "Read the Signs." As tempting as it is to say they're at their best tearing into a song like "You're Gonna Find Out," on which they rock so hard, you'd swear they were auditioning to play the Sonics on a very special Mad Men, truthfully, it's kind of cool to hear them change things up from time to time -- the post-Byrds psychedelic pop of "You Don't Look So Good," for instance, or the organ-driven spy-rock vibe of "It Ain't Right." Oh yeah, and nothing here sounds like it happened after 1967.
Standout Tracks: "Jenny Jenny," "You're Gonna Find Out" A. WATT.
