Sisters 3

There seems to be some connection between home-schooling and stellar sibling musical acts—think Eisley or even the Hansons. Sisters 3, who first performed from their bedroom closet as children, are no exception. Their debut shows a cohesiveness that seems unique to sister acts, from their slightly quirky pop sensibility to their culled-from-the-same-genepool vocals. Playing heavily on uniting arrestingly similar, ethereal voices in close-knit harmony, Star Spangled glows with the nostalgia of ‘40s sister-group the Andrews Sisters and puts a slightly heavier spin on contemporary trio the Roches. Lead singer AnnaChristie’s vocals glimmer over acoustic guitar rifts, sweet violin melodies, gorgeous classical piano flourishes and sisters Beatrice and Cassandra’s backup vocals without ever losing the girls’ seemingly intuitive playfulness—even on darker, more introspective material. Star Spangled is an album that is coy and alluring, and maintains just enough lighthearted whimsy that hand claps, tambourines and three-part sister harmonies are still charming and fresh.
