Lili Haydn

Lili Haydn has performed and recorded with the likes of Herbie Hancock, Tom Petty, Parliament-Funkadelic and Robert Plant and Jimmy Page. Yet on her third album, the singer and violinist summons none of those artists so much as she does Tori Amos, with whom she shares a penchant for trilling vocals, biblical references and bewitching arrangements heavy on atmosphere. The comparison favors Haydn, whose music flirts with the ethereal but is grounded enough not to fly off with it. Still, she reveals plenty of her own personality throughout Place Between Places, particularly when her virtuosity on the violin takes hold of songs such as the mesmerizing, instrumental title track and a simply burning cover of P-Funk’s “Maggot Brain,” on which she’s joined by the Dakah Hip Hop Orchestra and forces the listener to think of no other artist but her.
