Detroit is known for giving birth to Ted Nugent, the MC5 and the White Stripes. How Pas/Cal survived more than a day in that city is a question for the ages. One of the most twee acts to come down the pike in recent years, Pas/Cal makes harmony-laden orchestral pop in the style of the Zombies and the Left Banke. It's catchy as hell and enjoyable for the most part, if a little overly sugary at times. Closer listen reveals Pas/Cal's world isn't really sunshine and lollipops; a sly sense of humor lurks inside the sweetness. But I'll still bet Ted Nugent would kick the entire band's ass without a second thought.
