Forward Russia
(Mute)
After 2006’s Give Me a Wall, a debut that included numbers for song titles, sweeping hooks and those “stand out” tracks that instantaneously caught your ear, Forward Russia has forged a decidedly more sophisticated sound. Unlike Wall, a single song does not leap out from this 11 track album; instead, the amalgam of thought provoking, ominous tunes works together to create a super-charged record.
It proves to be more instrumentally focused as well, with the nearly 2 minute intro on “Some Buildings,” the echo-y guitars and spastic drumming on “Breaking Standing” and the epic, nine-minute long “Spanish Triangles.” And Forward Russia makes sure not to follow lyric-chorus-lyric formula, a quality highly appreciated by these ears after several listens.
