Danava

Portland’s Danava plots epic psychedelic journeys straight out of Heavy Metal where, from bucket seats in the bed of your cosmic El Camino, one watches planets rush by like highway mile markers while in the distance, God does bongers and gets head on his Jupiter-sized LoveSac™. Yeah, that is a lot of hyperbole to live up to, but Danava’s the band to back it up. When they set off for “where the ocean meets the sky” on the lead/title track, playing like Sun Ra conducting The Sword, exaggeration wanes like a boner in a blizzard. Danava’s hallmark, tensely patient power chord and synth vamps, remains the through-line, opening into vast, universal jams, but then they whip out “A High Or A Low,” incorporating garage rock and Stax-y horns without compromising what they do best. Fittingly, Unonou rides out on the 13-minute “One Mind Gone Separate Ways,” a tour that stops at Parsons, Crimson and Purple, and ends up on the Sun (Ra) where free jazz is the corona and core.
