While Jeremy Moses Curtis’s Album in no way sounds like the Grateful Dead, it did send me digging for my vinyl copy of Workingman’s Dead. There is a similar vein of Americana and rootsy workingman’s balladeering, but Curtis’s album manages to be both atmospheric and a model of straightforward storytelling. A stellar collective of Cambridge musicians back up Curtis’s gravelly vocals and bass, including Treat Her Right’s Jim Fitting (harp) and Twinemen’s Billy Conway (drums). “Satan” is a chilling little tale followed up by the haunting and beautiful “Daisies on a Shelf”; “Sleep” is a lovely instrumental that evokes its title; classic rockers “Left Coast” and “Lie with Myself’ are surefire concert crowd pleasers. This album has such a classic feel it could be from a parallel universe’s vinyl collection.
