Archie Bronson Outfit
(Domino)
After making fans salivate for four years after sophomore release Derdang Derdang, England's Archie Bronson Outfit open their third album Coconut with the whirling, fuzzed out goodness of "Magnetic Warrior." Ahh, my fix is fulfilled...the wait made worthy.
Already known for fashioning harmony from cacophony, ABO utilized the same equation with this release. Now Sam Windett's voice is drowned out more than ever by his dirty, droning guitar, Mark "Arp" Cleveland's erratic drums beats and Dorian Hobday's punchy bass lines. "Shark's Tooth" is a prime example of such sonic chaotic bliss: with drumming that emulates a horse's gallop, Windett's reverbed vocals howl incomprehensibly over an equally echoed, jangly guitar, and within the spluttering mess of sounds emerges a solid beat that soaks into your brain and very nearly makes your head pop.
Even with slower tracks, such as simple number "Hunt You Down," ABO grab your attention. The four minute track includes perhaps only 2 minutes of lyrics in which Windett repeatedly declares, "I'm gonna hunt you down," which juxtaposes with the calm, plucky, almost upbeat music going on behind him. Archie Bronson Outfit continues its wave of gritty, garage rock, making Coconut yet another worthy addition to their catalog.
