Black Angels
(Light in The Attic)
“Turn on, tune in, drop out,” the Black Angels’ motto — borrowed from ‘60s supporter of medicinal LSD and Harvard professor Timothy Leary — is very befitting for their brooding, psychedelic rock. Directions finds the Angels on the same sonic plateau as their debut Passover; in fact, it sounds like “Passover: the Redux,” but gloomier. The Austin, TX sextet systematically shells out fuzzed out, dark, melodic tracks laced in political fervor. As singer Alex Maas’ murmurings get drowned beneath the heavy music, listeners will almost miss his charged words. On “Deer-Ree-Shee,” a sitar is featured along with Maas’ lyrics, “Bang, bang your magic is here, white men and God are one?”
Though Directions may resemble Passover the Angels are solid musicians and they’ve assembled an album filled with droning, rhythmic goodness that will makes you want to kick back and let the tunes carry you away.
