Carl Craig

Carl Craig is one of the founders of techno. He has been releasing singles, albums and remixes since 1989, although often under pseudonyms such as Paperclip People, 69 and Innerzone Orchestra. He’s inventive but consistent: songs may swirl into the ether in imaginative and abstract passages, but they’ll return to a familiar 4/4 thump. Carl Craig Sessions compiles remixes, singles and alternate versions for two lengthy continuous mix CDs. Highlights of disc one include an eight-and-a-half minute version of the Paperclip People’s hypnotic classic “Throw,” the Grammy nominated (!) remix of Junior Boys’ “Like A Child” that earns every bit of its nearly eight minutes, and a percussive, wild mix of Cesaria Evora’s “Angola.” The second disc, which focuses primarily on new mixes of Craig’s own singles, is mostly instrumental and ultimately less rewarding, but overall, Sessions works well as both a Carl Craig primer and an update on this legendary producer.
