Hot Club Of Cowtown
(Proper)
If their name conjures up a certain old time feel, Hot Club Of Cowtown come about it from a perspective that allows entitlement and authenticity. Combining elements of bluegrass, western swing, ragtime and torch song laments, this nimble trio deftly conveys jaunty fiddle fueled hoedowns of both original and vintage variety. To their credit, they perform each with equal aplomb, adapting a sprightly swing to songs like "If You Leave Me," "Cabiria" and "Heart of Romain" and an affecting sentimentality when in comes to classic covers such as "Georgia" and "Someone To Watch Over Me." In fact, in rendering the latter, they show a penchant for combining that breathless devotion with a smoldering sensuality.
While all three members of the group are given ample opportunity to shine, singer/violinist Elana James is rightfully showcased at center stage, proving herself adept at rotating her roles. However, Hot Club Of Cowtown inevitably is at their best when tapping a traditional tune like "The Magic Violin," turning it into an impressive instrumental showcase that ably demonstrates the group's tightly knit symmetry. All in all, Wishful Thinking shows them worthy of a big breakthrough, framing them as a group with a classy, classic attitude and a most remarkable sense of style.
