Tilly and the Wall
(Team Love)
Like a pillow fight, Tilly And The Wall fits in perfectly as a good time venture for teenagers bouncing around the room in their PJs. On the flip side, if you’re not in the mood, content to sit and read or enjoy an overcast day, it’s as annoying as any unwarranted blow to the face. The American counterpart in many ways to the growing genre of ebullient indie-pop (see: Britain’s Los Campesinos! and Australia’s Architecture In Helsinki), Tilly triumphs by boasting the least grating boy vocalists, while still harboring sugary sweet, crush-worthy girl singers. There’s a slight edge amidst the cuteness, at times; it’s like topping your fries with ketchup and Tabasco, as the ladies chant about talking smack and beat downs on “Pot Kettle Black.” Like all good pop, though, Tilly And The Wall is at its best when not acknowledging through smirks and an arm’s distance that it’s making pop music. More of that please.
Standout tracks: “Falling Without Knowing,” “Tall Tall Grass” ZACHARY BLOOM
