Irish quartet Fight Like Apes easily wins the award for "Longest Title for The Shortest EP" - hello, Fiona Apple! The 10 minute long Filled His Head is a quick spurt of five bombastic tracks, a teaser, of what FLA has to offer. Lead singer Maykay and her crew specialize in loud, chaotic synth-filled, punk rock with sometimes silly, sometimes profane lyrics that will make laugh, scratch your head and blush simultaneously. With two prior EPs, their debut Fight Like Apes And The Mystery Of The Golden Medallion and live performances already causing quite a buzz across the pond, this US release is intended to educate we Yanks on what the UK already knows: Fight Like Apes is a fun ride.
Maykay shouts and shrieks her way through Filled His Head and charms you with her tongue-in-cheek lyrics. She coyly sings "would you like a fresh rolled cigarette/I rolled it up myself and put some gusto into flippin' it" on "Lend Me Your Face" and even their cover of McLusky's "Lightsabre" snares you. After a listening to other tracks it is safe to say that this short release does not include some of the band's catchier songs. Filled His Head is a fun a peak into Apeland; however, it does not fully capture all that FLA has to offer... I'm left wanting more.
Standout Tracks: "Lightsabre Cocksucking Blues," "Can Head" APRIL S. ENGRAM
