Reviews of the Avetts in NYC July 9, Afrika Bambaataa & Seun Kuti in NYC July 5

We’ve got more you-are-there live reviews from the front lines for ya. The Avett Brothers tore it up Wednesday night at Stuyvesant High School in New York, and Anthony D’amato was there to smell the greasepaint and hear the roar of the crowd. “By the time the Avetts hit the stage there were nearly 1500 people in the auditorium (whose capacity was 900!),” writes D’amato. “At the end of the night when the Avetts returned to the stage for an encore, the crowd reached an ear-piercing volume, and while hyperbole is the enemy of any levelheaded concert review, I would be amiss to describe the atmosphere as anything but euphoric.” (We’ve got exclusive Avetts photos too, courtesy Crackerfarm.)
Meanwhile, mighty Mike Edison was on hand July 5 to catch an installment of NYC’s Summerstage concert series, this one featuring hip-hop godfather Afrika Bambaataa (manning the digital wheels of steel) plus Afrobeat upstart Seun Kuti (son of the late Fela, and brother of Femi). “Brutal in funk and force,” summarizes Edison, of the latter’s band.
