Founders Jordan and Loney haven't played together since 1971.

Considering some of the baggage, it ranks as one of the most unlikely reunions to come down the pike, but there ya go: the legendary Flamin' Groovies are set to get back together at this year's Ponderosa Stomp. Well, at least it will be Groovies founders Cyril Jordan and Roy Loney, who plan to get onstage together for the first time since 1971 with the mighty A-Bones backing them up.

The Groovies originally formed in San Francisco in the late ‘60s, specializing in a unique brand of roots-tinged pop ‘n' psych and eventually moving into more hard-edged, Stones-styled territory as epitomized by their classic tune "Teenage Head." After Loney left to go solo, Jordan continued to helm the band, along with new vocalist Chris Wilson, through their Sire Records era (c.f. Shake Some Action) and beyond, eventually with a revolving cast of players. More recently Jordan has been seen playing with Bay Area band Magic Christian, while Loney's continued to front a series of hard-twanging, at times rockabilly flavored outfits such as the Phantom Movers and Roy Loney and the Longshots.

Each man can justifiably claim a little corner of rock ‘n' roll history for himself, but for longtime Groovies acolytes, the chance to see them performing again should prove irresistible.. So this year surely one of the highlights of the 8th annual Ponderosa Stomp - April 28 and 29 at the House of Blues in New Orleans - will be the reunion of Jordan and Loney. As the Stomp organizers put it, they "took the concept of greasy, good-time, high energy rock & roll to its face-melting limits, and created a template for countless underground American bands in the process... Their performance is the latest example of what has become a P-Stomp tradition of reuniting legendary, unsung musicians who haven't performed together - or sometimes even spoken - in decades."
