On Glen Campbell's last two albums - his final ones, he
says, as he's been diagnosed with early-stage Alzheimer's - he covered songs by
Paul Westerberg, Guided by Voices, Green Day, Foo Fighters, and a handful of
other artists. And while those albums were universally well-reviewed in all the
right hipster places, those reviews haven't necessarily translated into a full
embrace of his music by the Pitchfork set.

Matthew Sweet, his name synonymous with the early-'90s
rebirth of the power pop genre, and one of the few artists who didn't consider
the term to be pejorative (the Posies and Tommy Keene never liked it much) had
a special reason for touring in 2011. And it wasn't just the recent release of
his fine new album, Modern Art (Missing Piece). "We thought about supporting the new record," he
told a rapt full house at Yoshi's in
San Francisco's
Fillmore district. "

This was the
show of the year a far I was concerned. Also on the bill was Portland
legends Pierced Arrows, featuring Fred and Toody Cole from Dead Moon, but
unfortunately I was not able to get there in time to catch them. Years ago I
caught Scratch Acid at a club in Philly called Revival, on April 29, 1987. On
that evening vocalist David Yow was sick as a dog and asked if anyone in the
crowd had any antibiotics (no one did) and with that launched into an

Both of these
bands originally hail from Springfield,
Missouri and had
apparently met in their formative years and have been friends and occasional
touring partners ever since. In Someone Still Loves You Boris Yeltsin you've
got three of the most normal looking dudes ever to grace a college campus, plus
a rhythm guitarist who looks like he walked out a Kyuss video. Their pop sound is both generic
and completely unique, sometimes both qualities poppi

At age 70 Paul Simon belongs to an elite but aging artistic
fraternity whose membership also includes Bob Dylan, Leonard Cohen and Kris
Kristofferson, singer/songwriters whose work is ingrained in the very fiber of
popular culture. These are artists whose revered reputations and esteemed
pedigrees elevate any encounter beyond that of mere entertainment and into
realms reserved for great masters who have the power to enthrall, inspire and

Waiting
out the opening act tonight (December 4) in the lobby of the Warfield Theatre,
stuck in a narrow strait between the always mobbed bar and the long line for
the merch table, I had to endure a single-file parade of what must have been
the most, shall we say, unattractive rock 'n' roll audience ever assembled in
San Francisco. It easily eradicated the previous benchmark at the same venue
for Motorhead a few years back. A large crowd of people over 50 in

You may think California's all about swaying palm trees
and endless summer. But the Jigsaw Seen, representing greater Los Angeles, and Allen Clapp & His

you to think again, pal. Both aggregations have new albums (Jigsaw's Winterland on Vibro-phonic and Clapp's Mixed Greens on Minty Fresh) that rank
among the best material they've ever recorded. And there's not a surfboard,

I wanted to get
there early enough to catch Portland's
Mean Jeans (Dirtnap Records) but did not make it. Arrived a bit after Total
Control had hit the stage. This punishing 5-piece, who hail from Australia and feature members of UV Race and

At
this stage in my fogeydom, nothing makes me feel and look like a youngster more
than going to a classic rock concert, in this case, Sting. And while Sting's
fans haven't aged as gracefully as the 60-year-old musician, who, performing
the first of three sold out intimate dates at the Wiltern, looked too damn fit
in his tight jeans and equally tight t-shirt revealing quite the buff physique.
That's just wrong. The man indeed has it all.

Beautiful or So What, Paul Simon's release earlier this year, is a
front-runner for best album of 2011. Filled with songs of insight, beauty,
humor, and vivacity, So Beautiful or So
What is on the short list of records that stand with the best of an artists
career nearly 50 years after they first recorded. On tour to ostensibly promote
this achievement, Paul Simon somewhat perversely chose to play only four of his
new songs in concert. However, there ca

Newly reformed, the band now consists of:

3. Charly Cazalet - Bass
4. Mickey Finn - Keyboards

So you all know
about this Wild Flag band. Two-thirds of Sleater-Kinney (Carrie Brownstein and

It
was one of those perfect rock 'n' roll days you never could have planned this

It
felt like a different kind of evening right from the start when the pre-show

Slumberland's recent signings form New Jersey, Big Troubles, a month or so ago
