“B” FOR TEXAS: Blurt at SXSW 2010
Mar 16, 2010
Migas. Music. Mayhem. Day parties. Nighttime showcases. Blurry memories. We've done it all before and now we're doing it again.
BY FRED MILLS
Everybody ready for Austin? The BLURT crew is packing our plastic flasks, party clothes and portable defibrillators and headed to the annual South By Southwest music conference and festival this week. You may have heard about it. And we're thrilled to be partnering with several labels and organizations this year for some seriously fun parties and showcases.
First and most importantly, we're cohosting the Second Motion Records showcase featuring Adam Franklin & Bolts of Melody (Franklin, of course, is also a member of the mighty Swervedriver), Grant Hart (late of Husker Du), Tommy Keene, Marty Willson-Piper (of the Church), singer-songwriter Gemma Ray and Irish rockers the Walls. This takes place Saturday night at the Taproom At Six and you really don't want to miss it - arrive early, as we predict the joint will be stuffed to the gills with SXSW badgeholders and wristband-wearers. Should be a most excellent way to wrap up the week and return home with your ears still ringing. Full details, address and relevant links are below.
Backtracking a few days, on Thursday from 12-5 at B.D. Riley's the iNSIDERS NETWORK will be presenting their showcase, then on Friday we'll be at both the 15th Annual Bloodshot Records Party (12-7, at the venerable Yard Dog Gallery) and the Sonicbids Official Party (11:30-5:30, Maggie Mae's). And prior to the Second Motion bash, there's the Mpress Records Showcase, 12-5:30, at the Soho Lounge. Again, see below for complete details.
What else? Who the hell knows! Aside from heading down to South Congress every morning for migas and tortillas at Gueros Taco Bar, all we know about our itinerary is that it's, er, flexible. Panels at the Convention Center? Check. Day parties we've RSVP'd to? Check. Harassing the roller girls who skate up and down 6th Street? Check. Asking everyone we know, "So, like, you gonna waste time spending in line just to see Hole?!?" Check. Buying lukewarm pizza from that dude at the corner of 6th and Red River at 2 in the morning? Check. Hungover on Sunday morning and finally getting around to calculating if that piece of Jon Langford art we bought earlier in the week at Yard Dog will actually fit in our carry-on of if we're gonna have to get the hotel to ship it back for us? Check!
Incidentally, a very special thanks to our hosts at each of these events, as we are damn proud to be a cosponsor. Please drop by for the festivities and refreshments, grab some free BLURT swag, and make sure you come up and introduce yourselves to us.

The panel was put together by recording artist Samantha Murphy (who operates her own multimedia company The Highway Girl) and will feature Bradley (also of Outlandos Music and the Insider's Network), Michael Petricone (SVP Government Affairs of the Consumer Electronics Association), recording artist Rob Giles (of The Rescues) and recording artist Anais Mitchell. It all takes place, naturally, at SXSW ground zero, the Austin Convention Center, on Wednesday March 17, 3:30 - 4:30.
