Live at the Roxy
by Indigo Girls
(Vanguard)
BY LEE ZIMMERMAN
Their rabid following among the lesbian legions aside, the Indigo Girls' populist anthems and gently strummed folk-infused ballads elicit a good-natured vibe that isn't exclusive to any particular gender or sexual preference. There's abundant evidence resonating through this engaging performance recorded live in Atlanta in 2007, a mostly unplugged set that resounds with the bracing, effusive melodies that have graced their studio albums for more than two decades.
As easily judged from rapturous reaction struck by the hometown audience, the duo make an easy connection; dressed down in tee shirts and jeans, they display an unpretentious appeal that breaks down any barriers between artist and fans. Likewise, the music offers a soaring blend of breezy sentiments and stirring spiritual empowerment, from the wistful reflection of ballads like "Hope Alone" and "Lay My Head Down" to the irresistible surge of Indigo standards "Closer To Fine" and "Galileo." A rugged cover of Dylan's "Don't Think Twice, It's All Right" and a searing take on "Midnight Train to Georgia" -- featuring erstwhile pal Brandi Carlile and the dynamic Atlanta ensemble Three Five Human respectively -- embellish the mix, but even when left to their own devices, the Indigo Girls not only come closer to fine but surpass it entirely.
Special Features: Three bonus tracks - Midnight Train To Georgia, Rock And Roll Heaven's Gate (acoustic), Land of Canaan
