10 Mistakes you should stop making with your Skin

Our skin is one of the most important organs that makes up our bodies – and is certainly the biggest – yet we don’t often give it the treatment it needs and deserves. Therefore we’ve compiled a list of 10 of the most common mistakes people are making in regards to their skin, so we can start to look after it a little better.

1. Not taking your makeup off each night…and properly

Taking your makeup off at the end of a long day can feel like a bit of a chore, but it’s one you definitely shouldn’t skip. Leaving makeup on to simply top up with more the next day clogs up pores resulting in breakouts and blemishes.

2. Being too rough on highly sensitive areas

From scrubbing our faces dry rigorously with tough towels to scrubbing our makeup off with wipes, it’s fair to say our faces take quite a bashing. This can be really damaging for those super sensitive areas of the face – particularly surrounding the eyes – so take it a little easier.

3. Not applying your makeup with clean products or hands

You wouldn’t wash the dishes with a dirty cloth, so why do we apply our makeup with dirty brushes or without cleaning our hands first? Bacteria that thrive in dirt can cause a lot of problems to our skin, so ensure you wash your brushes regularly, and that you always wash your hands first too.

4. Not adjusting your skin care products to the different seasons

Different weather conditions call for different products, yet so many of us are guilty of using the same lotions and potions all year round without fail. It’s easy to do so when we find a product we like, but this could leave our skin without vital nutrients in the winter, or without proper sun protection in the summer, for example.

5. Using products well after their ‘best before’ or sell-by dates

Especially if you spend quite a lot of money on products, it can be tough to throw things out just because they’re past their sell-by date, but there’s a reason for these dates. Ingredients in the products could go out of date and could actually become damaging to your skin, so check the labels and have a clear out.

6. Indulging in an unhealthy diet full of sugar

We all know we should cut down on a sugary diet and eat more healthy foods, and it’s really important to consider upgrading your diet not only for your general health but for your skin too. Improve your diet with this handy guide.

7. Not getting enough rest and sleep

Sleep is so important for our bodies and minds, and it’s also vital for our skin. Not getting enough sleep can leave your skin dull, tired and can even cause blemishes due to your body not having the time to rest and recover.

8. Picking at your spots and acne

Picking large pimples or acne spots can be so tempting, but unless you know what you’re doing and can do so carefully, it is likely to result in the spot becoming bigger and angrier. Picking acne spots can also cause them to spread and scar.

9. Waiting too long to start using anti-aging products

It’s a myth that you only should start using anti-aging products as you grow into your 40s, for example. In fact, the earlier you start using them, the better as they form a prevention method! You can get great anti aging products online too, which makes life even easier.

10. Only wearing SPF on summer holidays

Just because you’re not sunning yourself on a beach every day, it doesn’t mean you should forget to protect your face from the sun’s rays. Using a moisturiser with an SPF is good for protecting skin from conditions like skin cancer and also from premature aging.
